0. Housekeeping
---------------

Welcome back to all list members of N&V-L Argentina and apologies
for the long delay in getting this list going again.

Remember that postings to the list should be sent to the List
Editor at <me@eltnewsandviews.com> with the message

POST N&V-L Argentina

in the subject header (not in the main body of the mail).

The start of a new year is a good opportunity to remind you of
the 'rules' of the list. In short form these can be simply stated:

1. Material should be "suitable for teachers of English in
southern South America". This is a very wide brief but
there are eventual limits.

2. References to people, associations and other postings should
be measured and courteous, within the acceptable standards of
academic debate. This means disagreement may be robust but
should be rooted in reason rather than emotion.

3. Postings should be reasonably short, normally never more than
two or exceptionally three screens. If you wish to make longer
postings these may be more suitable for our printed newsletter
"ELT News & Views".

4. We are quite happy to post details of new products or projects
provided that these are informative rather than purely commercial.
in nature Common sense and education should enable posters to see
the difference.

5. All postings are subject to editing and the posting of any message
to us for publication implies tacit agreement to this condition.
We reserve the right to restrict postings if they do not meet the
above conditions.

6. Every posting must be signed with the name, affiliation and and
email number of the person who posted it. Replies may be to the
list or directly to the person posting but anonymous or spurious
names or addresses will not knowingly be published.

Postings which in the opinion of the List Editor violate these
norms will be politely rejected with an indication of how they
can be 'amended' for posting. However it is in your interest to
respect the rules if you want your posting to go out straight
away.

And that's all from me for now.

2. Announcement from OUP
------------------------

We are sorry to announce that Ricardo Sampedro has left his
position as Marketing Manager in OUP .

Many of you met Ricardo when he joined OUP as an Educational
Consultant back in 1993. You will remember his enthusiastic
strides carrying his big bag of Oxford books into Argentine schools,
as well as his excellent teacher training sessions. As a colleague,
Ricardo has been a key person in reinforcing the high standards of
quality and respect for the teaching profession that are the Oxford
commitment.

Ricardo is leaving to develop an independent project called
Education for a Change, which will soon be launched with the
support of OUP Argentina. Although he will be greatly missed as a
permanent member of our team, we share with him his
enthusiasm, and wish him the best in the new career path he has
chosen. We are sure this is your wish too!

5. Ackowledgment
----------------

It is almost the beginning of the first academic year of the new
millenium in Argentina and for two Argentinian ESL instructors it
is the end of one school semester in California, USA.

Liliana Marcos from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata and
Adriana Benvenuto from Universidad Nacional del Comahue have just
finished their Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program in the USA and
they would like to share with people from this list a reflection
upon their experience.

Both teachers are deeply thankful for having been part of this
enriching and unforgettable experience. At the same time, they
would like to highlight that both of them graduated and are now
working at state universities in Argentina. The professional
development they acquired over the years at those insitutuions
allowed them to feel confident and prepared enough to teach in
the USA and interact with its culture. They would like to encourage
people to believe in public eduacation and support intercultural
programs.

Thier experience will surely enrich the students they teach and
peers starting a chain that will help the educational system grow.
This program was possible thanks to both universities and the
Fulbright Commision.

7. About all these new text books
----------------------------------

Lots of new material has been rushed out by ELT
publishers to meet the requirements of the new
syllabuses for EGB and Polimodal. But does it
suit the teacher's needs ?

What do you think about recent ELT material ? What
seems good for your reality ? What has worked or
failed for you?

On the other hand, do we need new course books at all ?
Can't a good teacher get results without/despite changing
material every second year or so ?

Let's share some opinions on this - before we commit
ourselves to buying our books for the new year, let's
see if they're going to be/do what we want !

N&V-L is supposed to be a news and discussion list so
let's pick up this thread.

2. On textbooks
---------------

I think it is a great idea to start a discussion on new
(and perhaps not so new) textbooks for EGB and Polimodal
in Argentina.

I am very critical of text books, because in spite of the
enormous number of published texts, I can't say I find
great variety. Many of them don't fit the need of kids in
Argentina and I feel that most of them underestimate the
intelligence of children (and teachers!).

But I am happy to say that I have found a precious exception
in new text - "Content with Content" - written by Ana
Armendáriz, Silvia Luppi and Silvia Rettaroli, published
by Kapelusz. In these texts, English is a vehicle to learn
content, to explore contents which would be valid and
interesting to the learners in their own language. Each
project develops a theme through several sections and
activities, leading to a final task and evaluation. At
last, a series of text books for EGB 2 with a task-based
learning approach!

I sincerely congratulate the authors of "Content with Content"
and warmly recommend teachers at EGB level to go through the
learner's and teacher's books (both equally rich) with a view
to trying them out.

3. Accreditation query
---------------------

Dear list members,

I would like to know which would be the next "steps" for a
"profesorado graduate", i.e. what other degrees one can seek
for and which would be the logical order, if there would be
any. And another question: which are the equivalents in
Spanish for MA, BA, MSc, Dip. , PhD.?
